We’re back again with Dr. Peter Zinoman to continue our discussion on Hồ Chí Minh. Is he the evil commie, or is he the gentle Uncle Hồ, father of a sovereign nation? There’s just so much, we had to do a part 2.

Before we get into it. We got a lot of feedback from the last podcast, Hồ Chí Minh Part 1. It seems that simply saying Hồ Chí Minh’s name is a trigger for some, in which they sound off in anger and resentment. Others applaud us for treading into this territory, as many Vietnamese Americans tend to stay away. Chopsticks Alley recognizes the need to better understand Hồ Chí Minh and his impact on Vietnamese Americans and Vietnamese living in Vietnam.

This podcast will be a great resource to the Vietnamese American community and anybody studying or interested in this history because right here, right now, we are sifting through Hồ Chí Minh’s story and call attention to how problematic the singular narrative can be. At Chopsticks Alley, we are dedicated to amplifying a multitude of stories, and we are definitely not going to miss out on Hồ Chí Minh’s.

Let’s dig in shall we?

Dr. Peter Zinoman was born in Bangkok and trained at Cornell. He is currently Professor of History and Southeast Asian Studies at University of California, Berkeley. He is the founder of the Journal of Vietnamese Studies, the only peer-reviewed academic journal in English devoted to Vietnamese history, society, culture and politics. He authored many books such as: The Colonial Bastille: A History of Imprisonment in Vietnam, 1862-1940. He is also the co-translator and editor of Dumb Luck: A Novel by Vũ Trọng Phụng.
