How Much Can Our Brains Grow, Change, and Learn?

The first step is to appreciate the capacity the brain has for learning new things, and frankly…that capacity is beyond our mankind’s comprehension.

Just as recently as 30 years ago, the brain was still considered a “black box” and there was little hope of ever determining how it worked. However, through the explosion in technology such as Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET), we can now discover how the brain learns real time.

In 1959, 400 neuroscientists were registered in the Society of Neuroscience. This year its membership exceeded to 40,000.

The Australian Neurology Nobel Laureate Sir John Eccles said in a lecture at the University of Colorado in 1974, “The brain indicates its powers are endless!"

How can this be?

The latest studies estimate our brain contains about 100 billion brain cells (called “neurons”) and the average neuron is connected to 10,000 other neurons. (It is these connections by the way that determine your ability to learn and grow and change.) The number of connections then are 100,000,000,00010,000. This is calculated by multiplying 100 billion times 100 billion times 100 billion ten thousand times. Writing that number in long hand would mean a “1” followed by over six million miles of zeros.

What does this mean to you?

The only element that holds you back from learning and growing and changing is what you say to yourself.

When you say “I can’t do this?” your brain agrees. When you say, “I CAN do this!” the brain says ABSOLUTELY! You can grow and change as much as you really want.
